the problem is the standard gksu and this was solved in vinux by Bill Cox by replacing this utility globaly witha wrapper around sudo - it works great.

Without this solution, I discovered that running the apps from the terminal works OK for some apps and not others.  For example with Update Manager if the update takes a long time the sudo timeout (by deffault in Ubuntu 15 minutes) and speech dies.

With the solution above the problem has gone away!
