Re: [orca-list] Confirmed archlinux gdm strangeness

I used to use startx all the time but some time earlier this year
changes to gnome caused auto mounting to stop working. That is, if I
get into gnome with startx and then plug in a USB drive or pop in a CD
ROM, nothing would happen; at least now, with 2.28, I get a message
that Orca reads telling me that I don't have the right permissions.
If I go in with gdm, I get all that functionality with no hits.

Hi All,
I'm just writing to confirm Steve's previous messages about gdm 2.28 on
ArchLinux.
Before 2.28, I used to get a beep when the login window popped up. That
was sufficient for me to type my username and password. Since this
upgrade, I haven't gotten that helpful cue.
More to the point, I admit to being unsure how I'm supposed to configure
this new version of gdm. I didn't need to make any changes to the old
one. /etc/gdm/custom.conf isn't very enlightening.

Maybe this is one for the ArchLinux mailing list. It seems that very few
people on this list are familiar with ArchLinux, and in particular with how it
configures GDM.

Another alternative, if you have BRLTTY or SpeakUp installed, is to log in at
the console and run startx when you want a Gnome session. This is what I do,
using BRLTTY to access the login prompt. I can't think of any reason why I
would want to start gdm unless I were spending most of my time in Gnome, which
I'm not. However, for people who use Gnome applications heavily, logging in
with Gdm makes sense.
