Unfortunately, most if not all netbooks come with Ubuntu however it is not what would be considered the 
standard distribution of Ubuntu. It's a netbook build that is usually created by the netbook manufacturer.  
If indeed their using the gnome desktop manager it is a very cut down version that is customized for the much 
smaller screen of a netbook. 

However, Ubuntu 9.10 seems much more tailored for the netbook architecture so installing the stock 
distribution may now be easier and a more viable alternative than it was before.
