Hi Guy:
This sounds like an Ubuntu problem. You might try the Ubuntu
accessibility list (or maybe even a more general Ubuntu list). I also
found this link via a Google search:

Hi all, I did the upgrade to Jaunty last night, especially since it
had been working flawlessly on my laptop. I am having a problem
though, I have no sound. I asked a sighted person to look at my
screen, and she let me know that every time I reboot, master volume is
muted. Even if she unmutes it, there is no sound. I do have the
.pulse_a11y_nostart file in my home directory. If anyone has any
suggestions in solving this, I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thanks much in advance,
Guy
