This appears to be a brlapi error. Do you have an up to date BRLTTY/brlapi
version installed?

Under Debian there's a package for it, namely python-brlapi. Your distribution
may have a similar package.

Alternatively, you could check out a copy of the BRLTTY repository and compile
it, which would also give you an updated version of brltty for your braille
display.
