Do you mean the virtualbox sound preferences?

 

If I understand you correctly you're trying to get the sound to work in your ubuntu VM.

 

I had to enable the dsound driver and tell vb to emulate an AC97 audio controller (sound16 didn't work).

 

The commands I used were;

 

vboxmanage modifyvm "ubuntu" -audio dsound

vboxmanage modifyvm "ubuntu" -audiocontroller ac97
