You are right, better use espeak native module.
However Some times the generic modules are usefull.

using espeak through portaudio makes trouble.
Better use this if sd_generic should be used:
echo hello |espeak -stdin -stdout -ven+klatt2 |paplay

Using libao audio output with speechd is the best :-).
