Might be some what off topic, But try out acer aspire 1 series.
It comes with 1 gb ram and 120 gb hdd.
it is an atom processor based laptop and i have tryed orca with ubuntu
netbook remix.
By the way I think the asus eeepc has a keyboard too small for working.
I too had the preferences dialog issue some time back.  But the acer
aspire1 is slightly bigger than the netbook eeepc of asus so may be
the preferences not appearing on the screen might be sorted out.
