I cannot remember if I posted on this list about it before, but there is a
front-end as requested below in the kies package which we have released.
It currently works with ocropus and allow driving the scanner and doing
the ocr and making a document in html outof the output.
Running with any screen reader it should do what is requested.
It is not as feature rich as the modern programs, but is usable in as far
as the ocr from ocropus is usable.
In the old dos days there was a commercial program from
Arckenstone called easyscan.
This frontend I am talking about is mutch like easyscan.
The program is available on the speakup ftp server under the goodies
directory, but you can also get a copy from:
ftp://ftp.csir.co.za/mi/national_accessibility_portal/wvdwalt/kies-12869.tar.bz2
If any one wants to get this frontend going, let me know.
There are instructions under the kies_wrappers directory on getting
ocropus and this front-end going.
kies_p2t, the main script, is by no means perfect, but it does allow a
non-technical user to do ocr under linux.

hello all,
This issue has come time and time again.
I think we must setup a web based team to look at this matter.
I have seen tesseract and tried ocropus. I feel it could be a good
software and we can persue the matter with the developers and perhaps
get it working even better.
I will provide my list of specifications in a new thread. I recommend
we setup a small team which can work together for developing some kind
of accessible interface that can run the image scanner, do the ocr and
either create a file or even send output to espeak.
I am aware of such softwares on proprietory side and it is a shame
that we never looked at this aspect.
Never the less there are so many other things to do.
I think let's take this as serious an issue as the pdf reading (I
don't know where that issue has disapeard ) and follow up.
Interested people please respond so that I post a new thread with my
recommendations and what needs to be done about this.
I already started to work on some similar software interface and would
like to share it with other people.
happy hacking.
