I replaced the file that  fails during the build with the one from the 
speakup git and got it built.
You then need to compress the speakup source found in /usr/src manually, 
copy the offending file over the one under that created directory and run 
module-assistant with -t and -O 
Then you get a .deb package in /usr/src which you can install.
