Re: [orca-list] suggestions for openoffice/orca improvements

While talking about OO, I'm wondering how we can tell the status of the
insert toggle? I think this was discussed earlier but I don't recall any
solution being offered. I understand the insert can't be hooked so whenever
it is pressed, all we hear from Orca is "Insert" but you can't tell if it is
on or off. I think there is something on the status line so flat reviewing
might be able to reveal something.

This brings me to another question. What is the best way to extend Orca in
a way where a key is pressed and selected text or portion of the screen can
be spoken? Preferably, we could obtain the info to be spoken from the object
modle. Basically, this is scripting in a way but could really extend the
functionality of Orca in a big way. Unfortunately, I don't know python
verry well at this point but I think with some good pointers and some
documentation of Orca's object modle, we could probably build some of these
functions as a community. I also like to have a hot key tell me the current
row and column in what text editors I use. The info is on the status line
but I would love to be able to hear it with a single key stroke.

OOo provides some info on the status bar, which you can get via a double
press of Insert+KP_Enter (desktop layout).

We're also working with the OOo team to try to get better positional
information for location left-to-right on the page:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502101.

The presentation of crossing page boundaries is an interesting thing
that I don't believe Orca handles. If Orca were to handle this (I'm not
sure if we get the info we need from OOo or not), what do you suggest
the presentation be for speech and braille?

yet. My first suggestion is for a way to tell what line/column
position you are at on a page. This would be very useful for
determining where page breaks are appearing in a document.

I haven't used OpenOffice writer, but I believe it is a WYSIWYG program.
In
this case, I believe the feedback should be more specific, telling you in
measurement units (inches, centimeters,or millimeters) exactly where you
are
on the page. As fonts change, row and column numbers won't give the user
the
specific knowledge needed to properly format the document--there will
always
be calculations needed to sort out where the current position is on the
page. Does OO writer provide this information somewhere already, such as
on
a status bar?
