Speaking of old Laptops, I also have an old Toshiba with 32 meg and a
266 MMX processer and I installed Slackware 12.0 with Speakup. I use
speech dispatcher plus speechd-up on it and it isn't too bad. Just
don't compile large programs on it and you'll do fine. It took over 3
hours to compile mplayer from source once so I never dared to compile
the kernel on it. I just build large apps like that on my fast box
and send it over and install the home-made slackware style package.
If I want to play other media content on it, I have to use the
plug::dmix option in espeak.conf of the Speech Dispatcher config in
order to play sounds and have speech at the same time.

Obviously, no GNOME on this bad boy.

I don't know if ubuntu 7.10 could be installed in a so slow system.
So, I think to give a try to Xubuntu, but, does Orca work with that operative system?

Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment, meaning that it will run fast while still delivering a
user-friendly interface. Older computers feel lively again, while newer ones will run faster than ever

I think xfce has not adapted accessibility apis from gnome so I am
afraid this won't work. Gnome is not suited for such slow machines.

I am also looking for some distro for installing to my old toshiba
laptop with 366 MHz processor and 32 mb of ram but I am even unsure grml
with text console only will run there.
