[orca-list] hardi beta problem, orca does not run in root user for ubiquity.

hello orca hackers.
just tried orca with hardi beta.
to my surprise when I do orca --no-setup on the root prompt, I don't
get orca speaking.
I first went to terminal in the live cd after setting up orca and then
did sudo su.
after this I quit orca and then do orca --no-setup.
but this does not give me any speech output.
I have been out of touch with hardy development for a long time so can
some one please tell me if I am doing some thing wrong?
