on my Ubuntu i do the following to install at-spi.
./ --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib/at-spi
sudo make install
Give this a try.

this also went well! This is whare things hung up yesterday.
now, sudo make install hangs:

make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
