[orca-list] audio help needed

Hi again,
I posted this problem before, but got no response, so I'll post it again.
My Ubuntu has sound, as Orca is talking, and I should have sound on boot-up, 
prompting me to enter my user name & password, as I hear the normal small 
pop sound when my sound card is detected.
But I just cannot get these operating system sounds going.
In the settings, there is a sound scheme selected, so it should be working, 
but even when I try to test a sound, it does nhanks

Any suggestions?
