Re: [orca-list] Accessible Help

Hi Janina:

From http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499744#c12, the Yelp maintainer says:

"I'm planning on porting to gecko 1.9 in the upcoming release cycle (or at least, hoping yelp gets ported this release cycle).

There is an initial port to use WebKit, but it's very much just an experiment at this point. Even if we were to integrate support, it would be an optional backend, along with gecko. While WebKit is inaccessible, gecko will be the default and people would have to jump through hoops to enable WebKit support.

Note, since the pain we went through on the previous "gecko is inaccessible" bug (bug #157941), accessibility is one of my highest priorities."

I think we should applaud him for this. It's so nice to see mainstream developers making accessibility a priority. As Don does the work, we should also make sure we reciprocate and provide him with prompt testing when he's ready for it.

Hi, Will:

Are we still expecting Yelp to upgrade to Gecko 1.9 following the
Firefox 3 release so that Yelp will just be natively accessible?

I'd like to add that Minefield's help has been very usable to me, even
if I'm not always finding the detail I'd like. It will be a red-letter
day when we can just press F1 and access help accessibly.

Hey All:

Just an FYI..

At CSUN, we were asked about the lack of good accessible help for GNOME, and I couldn't remember the workaround someone had posted. I did some digging and found it in http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=356041.

I also created/updated http://live.gnome.org/Orca/Yelp, which can be found from http://live.gnome.org/Orca/AccessibleApps.
