Have you already tried the following:  
1. Tools menu -> Options...
2. Select Accessibility in the resulting dialog.
3. Tab to the group of checkboxes.  The first one is "Use text selection
cursor in read-only text documents."  It's unchecked by default, and I
suspect this is the source of difficulty.
4. Having checked it, press OK and give things another go.
