Which version of Thunderbird? That's important, because 2.x isn't usable 
at all.
If 3.x, try to switch table reading mode by using Orca+F11.
Note: Thunderbird is in a very early stage of development. Just the 
first alpha-version. So do not expect too much. As a regular mail client 
I recommend Evolution.
