OK I take back what I said about not thinking it was pulse audio related.

Disabling software sound mixing in the sounds preferences dialogue solved 
the problem of swift cutting out (although it meant I couldn't listen to 
music with Totam).  The swift v5 voice works perfectly with ESD disabled in 
Ubuntu Hardy.

One other thing to mention is that before I started using the voice via 
gnome-speech for Orca I ran the swift terminal command (e.g swift "hello 
there") a few times and noticed it stopped working after I played a sound 
file.  It would report "Failed to open /dev/dsp" and wouldn't usually work 
again until I logged out/in.  I actually thought this would mean I couldn't 
use a swift voice while playing music but as I said, you can but music or 
not it cuts out all the time if ESD is enabled.

How do you find out what version of gnome-speech you're running?
