In replying to my original message, I finally got system sounds working.
I had to check the checkbox for using ESD on the Sounds panel under
preferences. I picked up the Borealis sounds theme package and I have
some really nice system sounds now.
One question here though. Is it possible to add other windows events
like opening up a menu or is it restricted to the various options
already present in the sounds preference panel?

I installed the package but am connected remotely from work right
now. So I'll have to seeif that makes a difference or not. The
install looked a bit strange as it seemed to overlay or replace the
libesd0 package. But the docs are symlinked to the esd-common package
and that documentation (README files) seems to imply that ESD is no
longer being maintained actually or at least it will be kept in gnome
for "a little longer". So it will be interesting to see if it has any
effect.
