Re: [orca-list] Do many users exclusively use Linux?

Hello,
I now in the main use only Linux. There are a very few occasions when I do need to resort to using windows (mainly when I want to test my own software I am writing under Windows and to produce windows builds). The one task previously I found I did need to go back to windows for which is becoming less is for some particularly poorly designed websites which only really seemed to work in internet explorer, although those are becoming less and less as firefox does seem to be being used more widely. Also of course there may be some programs which only Windows versions or equivalents exist (normally these are very specialist and you probably know if you are using one eg. one which comes to mind is the shooting training aids such as the noptel system).

One thing I would say, it may not be the best thing to say on this list, is that you may wish to ensure you have some text console backup to hand (eg. speakup). I say this because whilst orca is improving, and it really has come on since I started using it, there are still times when it may trip up or lock up. Also Orca does require the gnome desktop to be working correctly, and you just need something to go slightly wrong in a system upgrade, or in the system configuration and gnome may fail to start. Compare this to the text console which depends on much less, and the accessibility software there really does seem to be reliable (brltty and speakup are the ones I am thinking of) you should always have something to fall back on to recover your system. Before people say that any part of the system even the text console can get broken if upgrades fail, I say yes they can but as there is less involved so it is less likely to break.

Hi folks, well the subject says it all. I know that  there has been a great deal of work done on Orca and it is continually being improved, but is Linux a usable dayily system? Or is it best to still keep Win on my machine?

Best wishes
