You can specify the type of autio output in the speechd.conf file.
You used to specify it in the module for the speech synth you're
using. So if you were using the espeak module, you would specify it
in espeak.conf. I thought this got moved to the top level conf file.
Check with latest version of Speech Dispatcher; I haven't gone there
yet myself.

Also, while checking out Speech Dispatcher, you might wanna do some
testing with the spd-say command.

I am trying to change from gnome-speech to speech-dispatcher and
hopefully resolve my problem of Orca shutting down.
However, I cannot seem to be able to use Alsa even though I have got the
Alsa mixer using Add Remove menu in Ubuntu.
I keep running into this error message about not being able to use this
driver because the device is already in use by something else.
I even removed Pulseaudio from the sessions menu but still no
difference.
I presume that if I can't sort out Alsa I can't run Speech-dispatcher.
Pulseaudio gets around my problem of multi channel sound mixing but I am
told this stops Orca every ten or so minutes when it is working with
Gnome-speech.
How do I get Alsa to run and how do I make sure I am running
Speech-dispatcher once I have got things up and running?
