Mike: I think you must rebuild your Ubuntu.
And for the future I urgently recommend to build an image of your
partition sometimes.
You can do this via a Live CD, that contains an image program, such as
partimage.
Visit:

change to the grml folder, and download the ISO image.
It contains brltty, and it starts up in text mode.
Read the partimage manual.
