Orca Ubiquity install help!!

Hello,
I'm atempting to install ubuntu Edgy using the method described in the 
orca wiki.
The steps are:
1.  start the gnome-terminal  
2.  run: sudo su (to establish root access)
3.  stop orca with insert-q
ok so far
4.  run: orca --no-setup
Orca says "entering focus tracking mode" - but that's all she wrote.  
I typed ubiquity for the heck of it but no speech.

I tried the same thing with a feisty image but didn't even get the 
"entering focus tracking" message.  

So, has anyone run into this situation, or have I missed a step or two 
along the way.
