I've recently come across some free windows software which strips out all images from a web page, it also includes speech software:
http://www.screenreader.net/
I am currently working with my local blind centre to produce a linux distro which will make web surfing easier for the people with moderate to severe sight loss. Is there any software available in Linux which would do the same?

Hi Jan:
Is this a problem only when speech dispatcher support is used? If so,
the speech dispatcher support in Orca is all done by Tomas Cerha from
Brailcom, and any changes to it are currently being maintained by him.
If you can reproduce it with a gnome-speech driver talking directly to a
synthesis engine (i.e., not the gnome-speech driver talking to speech
dispatcher), let me know. I've tried using the gnome-speech driver for
eSpeak, however, and cannot reproduce it. :-( The mechanism I used to
test it was by rapidly arrowing through menu items in gnome-terminal.

Hi, Will,
of course I'm from Brailcom too and I know who maitained the speech
dispatcher backend but if without changes in speech dispatcher backend
come some change in speech canceling then I think that can be problem in
orca on another place. What do you mean about?

Jan:
Please try using Orca with a gnome-speech driver that talks directly to
a speech engine. I'm curious if the problem exists there as well.
Thanks!

Thanks for understanding.

Jan:
eSpeak is free and works on Ubuntu -- you might try that.
The reason I need you to try this is that I cannot reproduce the problem
given the steps I showed for testing it using Orca with the gnome-speech
driver for eSpeak (rapidly navigating through gnome-terminal menu
items). As such, it looks as though this might be a problem related to
Speech Dispatcher.
If you are unable to do the testing, I kindly request that you get Tomas
to take a look at this.
Thanks!

I use the very latest SD, Espeak and Orca, and I don't have any problems
in immediately stopping speech, so I guess it is an issue of Ibmtts.
I don't have a Ttsynth, so I cannot test it. The procedure is a bit
difficault, since the synth is non-free.

It is not problem of IBM TTS because the same situation is with
festival. My feel is that problem is arround priorities in orca code.
The problem come last several days after last changes in speech
dispatcher backend, exact say after last update of speech dispatcher
backend works all well but then come some changes in orca and now
canceling not works.

Hello Jan,
I cannot reproduce this with SD and Espeak, neither wit Orca, nore with
Speakup.
During my testing wiht SD and Festival and Flite to solve that Esound
issue, I also didn't observe this problem.
I use Ubuntu Feisty.

When I am using Evolution with Orca How do I actually view the message
body after I have tabbed through the information ie send mail, to,
subject, etc?
Also how do I prevent speech from repeating the same message subjects
or from people when I have done a down arrow to the next message?
I ask because someone has just helped me install Ubuntu and helped me
duel boot my desktop PC which has Windows on the Internal drive and
Feisty on the USB hard drive.
I am not using the latest version of Orca, just the version that comes
with Feisty.
I want to be able to send email with Evolution now I have had it set
up for this email address I am
using.

Hello Will and all,
I'll take a look at it. For now, I can just say, that I have already
noticed this strange behavior. If you remember, Will, this was the
problem which I reported to you when you first included SD backend in
Orca. I simply never got the stop commands which you said are always
executed by orca on user interaction etc. But than, with a later Orca
version, the problem disappeared
and it started to work as expected.
Then I was one nice day doing something on the SD backend and updated
Orca from SVN and the problem ocured again. Since it didn't prevent me
from doing what I wanted, I didn't investigate it and when I got back to
Orca a few days later, I updated from SVN and it disapeared again.
So what I want to say is, that this problem sometimes appears without
any change in the SD backend itself, but must depend on some changes in
Orca. I definitely don't say it is the fault of Orca. In fact believe
it there must be some problem in my code (in SD backend itself), but I
only describe what I experienced. When we were first investigating
this, you asked me, whether it is possible that something in the SD
backend is behaving synchronously. Could you please be more explicit
what you mean by it?
In any case I updated Orca from SVN today and the problem is here again,
so at least I can
investigate it. I'd be glad to test that with
gnome-speech but the Festival driver doesn't work for me and I don't
seem to have espeak support in my gnome speech installation. Is there
an easy way to get it? I'm running Debian unstable.
BTW, here is how test-speech ends on my box:
