Thanks Jon! The autogen should also spit out a warning/error if
automake1.9 cannot be found. Did you not get that warning/error?

Installing automake1.9 did it, sorry for not following the list as

This sounds like something similar to what Mike Pedersen saw. (I think)
If so, installing automake1.9 solved it. (I think) <smile> Worth a shot
anyway....
sudo apt-get install automake1.9
