Interesting.  If you're willing to experiment, you might try using the
gnome-speech driver for eSpeak (it's in gnome-speech SVN TRUNK, and
shipped with gnome-speech 0.4.8:

http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-speech/0.4/gnome-speech-0.4.8.tar.bz2

This would bypass SpeechDispatcher and might provide us with more data.
