Re: Orca Information about installing orca

Perhaps you missed the import of our Speakup Modified announcement just
the other day? No problem. Please find some answers below.

Hello,

I have just installed fedora core 6 with brltty support.
Would that be the boot.iso image provided by Dave Mielke at the brltty
site? If so, I strongly advise you to first update your FC6 system. It
will take some time. Over 70% of the packages first released as FC6 now
have been updated. Fortunately, you can pretty much start the process
and go do something else for a few hours.

I suggest:

1.) Add the SpeakupModified yum repository to your yum
configuration. Do:

sudo rpm -iv http://speakupmodified.org/speakupmodified-release.rpm

This will insure you get the very latest accessibility related FC6
packages, including the latest Orca when you update your installation.

2.) Upgrade using yum with the command:

yum upgrade

How can I proceed to install and configure orca with braille support?
While speech works quite well, issues with braille support have
previously been reported on this list. Perhaps others can elaborate on
the current status of braille under Orca on FC6--I don't use a braille
display myself. I cannot vouch whether we've resolved these issues with
our current builds, because I don't think our latest builds have been
discussed here with respect to this issue. I would like to know, so
please let us know.

It is my understanding that we are on our way to newer versions of
brlapi (and brltty) to fix the issues that have been reported here.
However, current releases of these packages at the brltty site,
http://mielke.cc/brltty/, are still from 2005.

How many applications can I use?
Quite a few, but certainly not everything. You cannot use KDE apps. You
cannot use older GTK apps. You cannot use gui apps created with other
toolkits such as fltk.

However, you can use some very major applications, such as several in
the Open Office suite. You can use media apps like the Helix player,
though you'll need to ask yum to install Helix as it's not there by
default.

Is it possible to use skype or other system for voice call?
Not the proprietary Skype, but several open source SIP and IAX clients
and servers are very accessible, especially from the command line.
Asterisk is very accessible and fully usable, though not trivial to
learn. If you have, or can get SIP service somewhere, you can use SIP
client apps like Twinkle perfectly well.

At the end, Is there any way in linux to use a remote desktop?
I don't believe we yet have the ability to use the graphical desktop of
a remote computer accessibly. However, it's quite easy to do many many
things on remote computers from the command line securely over ssh.

Graphical accessibility in this environment is still very very new, and
very much under development. If your only interest is in graphical
interactions, you will certainly restrict yourself to far less than the
environment itself actually provides to the assistive technology user.

Janina

Thanks for all,

Best regards,

Sauro
