While many may not like this, as it uses speakup in a text console, you
could try using GRML. For that you don't need a braille display or
hardware synthesiser as it comes with all the stuff to use speakup with
a software synth. Just use the swspeak option at the boot menu (IE. a
command such as
grml swspeak
) and then when it is loaded (I think it tells you) you just need to run
the command
swspeak
I understand that GRML can be installed to the hard disk, and once
installed it is possible to install gnome and orca, although you may
find that for some tasks the text console is better/faster, although if
you are familiar with GUIs only then getting used to a command line
environment may be a little work.
I just like giving people the options, and I feel GRML certainly is
worth mentioning if the question is really more about how can Linux be
installed without specialist hardware.

Hi all,
Is Ubuntu the only distro where a blind person can use Orca during the
installation, are there any other options? I have no braille displays or
things like that, are there any other distros that enable an easy
independent installation with Orca?
Thanks
