Re: [orca-list] problems with administrative tools and orca

Hi Mike and list,
I have tried gaining access to administration by enabling the root account.
I first set a password and then tried editing /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom
Unfortunately, every time I try to change the contents of this file and save
it, Gedit tells me that the file is read only. Despite clicking yes on a
dialogue that asks me if I want to try and replace the file with my modified
version, nothing happens.
Next time I try logging in, I stil cannot access the root account.

Is it giving me this error due to the fact that I am running a live cd?

Now what should I do?

Hi John, I thought this would have been fixed by now, but I guess it hasn't
been.
Anyway, the way I got them to work was to enable the root account, login as
root and run them from there.
Most of the time, this works.
Mike.

Subject: [orca-list] problems with administrative tools and orca

Hi all,

I am new to this list, so I apologize if this has already been discussed.

However, despite running commands listed on the orca FAQ, I am unable to run
orca with administrative tools such as synaptic package manager.

The following are commands I have tried using ubuntu 7.04

sudo su - root

cat > ~/.orbitrc << EOF

ORBIIOPIPv4=1

ORBIIOPUNIX=0

EOF

The problem is that immediately after putting in the second line cat >
~/.orbitrc << EOF

Orca just says greater than greater than. This is all the output I get,
even after entering subsequent lines of text in the terminal. It doesnt
appear to work.

I have also tried a second way. According to the web site, you can type sudo
su in the terminal and then type killall orca. Then, type orca again and it
should be running as root. Whenever I try this approach however, I get the
following error.

GTK accessibility module initialized. Speech not available.

So, I have two questions

1. Is it possible to do these accessibility commands using a live CD? I
want to make sure I know how to access all parts of the system before
installing gnome itself.

2. If these commands can be done to allow orca access, Am I doing something
wrong here?

Thank you for any help you can provide in advance

Sincerely,

John J Herzog
