In fact, a very recent version of portaudio v19 might be used
(development branch) because it includes dmix support.
Software mixing used to work on a test machine, for example espeak +
aplay worked here. 
Unfortunately, today, a number of crashes occur. 
If it is of interest for the users, we will have probably to fix this
issue ourselves, the Alsa person at PortAudio being too busy.

For adventurous people interesting to try software mixing with
test-speech + espeak + portaudio v19 + alsa, here is a little script:
install.sh installs the needed stuff for Ubuntu Feisty, uninstall.sh
cleans the files installed in /usr/local. 
If you rely exclusively on speech, it would be better to avoid it since
it will often crash.
