well, it just knows.
By default ORBit takes UNIX-sockets, but you can change bahaviour changing behaiour.

The object adapter takes care for "real" objects and assigns IOR to each object. ON yerver side you dont ask the "real" object for its IOR but
the ObjectAdaptor for the IOR it did assign to this object.
