You need libtool 1.4 and automake 1.4.  I had to install these as the
only libtool and automake on the system to make it work, ie, I
couldn't get them installed in parallel with the old libtool and
automake.  

Well, the right version of autoconf was already installed on my system,
via rpm. I didn't find a 1.4.rpm of libtool, so I compiled and installed
from source.

I get the very same error messages, though.
