You'd use the libdbus C bindings or (easier) glib-based ones with
GDBus.  For example, raw libdbus looks like this:

and it isn't exactly pretty.  Using a binding, whether that's dbus-
glib, dbus-qt, GDBus, or something else is usually a lot easier.
