One thing I notice comparing the 0.9.8.4 and 0.9.8.6 output is that in
0.9.8.4 it's loading the ifnet plugin, but in 0.9.8.6 it isn't. This
suggests some sort of packaging problem; you need to have an
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf containing
[main]
plugin=ifnet
