Alcatel X220 3G modem fails to connect using Network Manager

Alcatel X220 3G modem fails to connect using Network Manager

Running Fedora 14 with all updates

NetworkManager-0.8.3.998-2.fc14.i686
ModemManager-0.4-4.git20100720.fc14.i686
usb_modeswitch-1.1.4-1.fc14.i686
usb_modeswitch-data-20100817-1.fc14.noarch
ppp-2.4.5-12.fc14.i686

I have tested the modem on a windows xp machine and it works fine.

I verified that usb_modeswitch has switched the USB into modem mode:

lsusb:
Bus 002 Device 030: ID 1bbb:0017 T & A Mobile Phones

I have also been able to connect using wvdial and that works too. When I
did this I had to use ttyUSB4.

Attached is the messages log. I notice that NetworkManager is attempting
to use ttyUSB3 and not ttyUSB4.

I suspect that ttyUSB4 is the port that ppp must use and that ttyUSB3 is
the port for sending and receiving SMSes.

Thanks in advance.
