maybe you've lost drivers for wireless?
make ifconfig and iwconfig - is there a wireless card in your system actually?

It sounds like you configured your network manually somehow so NM will
ignore it.   Take a look at /etc/network/interfaces, it should have
nothing but auto <interface name>

For example mine looks like:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
