netbios, I'd expect.  PPP has the ability to return netbios nameservers,
which would then get stuffed into your Samba config files, and since
you'd have "winbind" configured as one of your DNS resolvers, hostname
lookups would just work because they'd be asking the MS DNS servers
first.  Of course on Linux this requires touching about 5 different
config files.
