Hi,
I got my sandbox build and test env working. I didn't like the packaged
options available, so I built my own sandbox and wrote some shell scripts to
flip back-and-forth between them. For me it works well, especially when I
need a stable system with a working network manager to do my job ;)
DW wrote me to say he'd prototyped some code for NM to handle those special
cases that I felt were critical to releasing a truly functional openswan
plugin, especially since I need some of those just to connect and use the
VPN gateways I have access to.
I'm waiting to get access to that prototype code, to see what I can do with
it. I'll also be looking closely at your work. Again thanks for the info.
Steve.

I was facing similar problems in my strongSwan IKEv2 plugin [1].
Interactive authentication is difficult and multiple active connection
is currently almost impossible to implement. I decided to strip these
features, as in most road-warrior scenarios this is not so important.

There have been some recent API changes:
- VPN secrets in separate settings (r4031)
- UUID, not connection ID is passed to auth dialog (r4053)

There is a NetworkManager PPA available at launchpad [2]. Just install
all the dev packages and you are ready to go. I'm also running a
strongSwan PPA [3] for my NM plugin, so you might want to check that out
to get another example how things work.

Martin
