What distro/release?  What version of NetworkManager?  It's important to
include this kind of information when asking such a question.

When "Manual Mode" is selected, NM basically steps out of the picture,
so nm-applet cannot get signal strength/quality from it.

In order for this to work, nm-applet would have to be modified to query
the signal strength directly from the system instead of getting it from
NetworkManager's dbus interface.
