Hi All,
Can you please offer some suggestions on getting my laptop wireless
working with Network Manager? The problem seems to be that network
manager is trying to use device wlan0 rather than eth1. A more
linux-able person than I got the laptop to connect to another network
using *system-config-network*, so it seems my wireless card is working
(also see below), and I am now trying to connect using my home wireless
network using WPA-PSK security, and I gather *system-config-network
*doesn't work with WPA—hence I am using Network Manager
I should note that I have two wireless devices in this laptop. There is
an onboard Ratech RT2500 device, which is configured as wlan0. I haven't
been able to get the driver to work with Fedora Core 8, so I've
installed a Lucent Technologies card, and this one seems to be working
fine. It is configred as eth1, but unfortunately NM seems to want to use
wlan0.
Can someone please suggest how I can get NM to use the eth1 device?
You can lock connections to a particular wireless card's MAC address by
using system-config-network (make sure you keep "Controlled by
NetworkManager" checked!) or via the connection editor (right-click on
the applet's icon, choose "Edit connections...").

Hi Dan (and everyone),
Thanks for the advice. I've added the MAC address of the Lucent device
to a connection, using “Edit Connections”, which is now called “Jerry
Lucent”. But I seem to be missing something. The “Jerry Lucent”
connection isn't offered as an option when I left-click on the NM gnome
icon. I see this: ( “[]” indicates colored text)
[Wired Networks]
Auto Ethernet
System eth0
[Wireless Network (Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE)]
jerry
[Wireless Network (RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI)]
jerry
If I click on the jerry wireless network that is under the Lucent
device, I get a request for “Secrets required by wireless network”, but
it doesn't allow for WPA-PSK security, so I cannot log in. I sure I'm
missing something obvious, but I can't seem to get the "Jerry Lucent"
connection to be offered as an option to connect to.
Many thanks,
Derek
