I have just discovered that there is a PPA archive for the development
version of network manager for Ubuntu:

https://launchpad.net/~network-manager/+archive

Installing the packages given there fixes my problem and I can use
network-manager to connect to my office's wireless. Note that the site
updates both network-manager and wpa_supplicant. Hence, I can not be
sure which new packages really fixed the problem.
