I too have Ubuntu Feisty (on a T60p/Atheros) and could *not* connect
to my AP with SSID broadcast disabled. Well, it did associate a few
times but mostly could not connect. I enabled broadcast (and WPA-PSK)
and now can connect without problems.
Now I just have the often disconnects that others have noted.
