I finally noticed that there is one difference between my
wpa_supplicant.conf and NM configuration: the (arbitrary) anonymous
identity was 4 chars in my wpa_supplicant.conf. With the same long
anonymous identity as NM, wpa_supplicant fails consistently as well. For
the record, the relevant output is below. If I set NM to use a 4-char
anonymous identity, it works fine.
This seems really weird, but certainly is not a NM issue. I did some
testing and up to 7 chars seems to work fine, and above that it gets
unreliable. The more characters, the less likely wpa_supplicant is to
connect?!? I'll do some more debugging and then take it up with the
wpa_supplicant people.
