One difficulty is that there is at least two distinct applets as far
as I understand it.  But yes, in principle scriptable front ends
sound reasonable.  So I went ahead and filed a wishlist bug on the 
kde applet. http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153990
