Robert i can commit this patches to svn but i was looking further to
support baselayout-2 instead of updating the current backend which still
works. Baselayout-2 is about to get ready and it makes more sense to
support it (and it's a vast improvement over the current used) a plus is
that is written in C. But if everyone agrees including Dan i can do it
and close bug #350101.
