Check to see if your power management daemon (possibly
gnome-power-manager) is telling NM to sleep when the lid gets closed.
NM doesn't do any power management on its own (which is a bug but
historically there wasn't anything to listen to), but instead relies on
a program like gnome-power-manager telling it to sleep.
I believe some laptops can be (or perhaps, are always)
hardware-configured to shut down the radio transmitter on lid closure
- which should show up in /var/log/syslog at the time you close the
lid, I would think.
