Atheros Network card doesn't always scan

Hello,

I'm an Ubuntu Dapper user with an Atheros 5212 based chipset in my
thinkpad's wireless card. I am using the madwifi-old, which ships with
Dapper. Recently, I've been having lots of issues where NetworkManager
won't scan for any networks and simply times out waiting for this card.
Now, I know the 5212 does take a long time to scan, but I haven't had
much trouble up until now.

I tried to use the madwifi-ng packages put together by the linux2go
website, but unfortunately can't seem to get the interface to come back
up after a suspend easily. I didn't seem to have any scanning issues
with the -ng drivers.

Now the weird thing is that this is fairly random. I use pam-keyring to
authenticate my keyring to my login password. Sometimes, I'll be able
to login and it will jump right on my WPA2 network. Other times, it
will time out scanning networks. I have to "disable wireless" and
enable it again in network manager with my fingers crossed. Just this
morning, I've repeated the process about 10 times, and still my wifi
(nor any neighbors) pops up.

I can, however, do a iwlist ath0 scanning. I get my network and all the
others in the area no trouble.

In /var/log/daemon.log, here is a snippet of info relevant to the scan:
