Ok, I somewhat accidentally solved the problem. It actually had nothing to do with all the strange edits that are recommended on the Ubuntu wiki and HOWTOs for NetworkManager. I just used the commands from the Developer web site (like listed in my previous email). The problem appears with the way that NetworkManager is loaded. Loading from /etc/init.d/NetworkManager does not work. Instead, I stole the attached files from the ubuntu networkmanager package (they go into the /etc/dbus-1/event.d) which seems to load NetworkManager through the dbus program, and so far, it has survived two reboots for me, so it seems like it is working now (whereas before it would work until reboot and then stop working). Somehow (it remains a mystery to me), these files even made it into my new network-manager-cvs20060815 debs (I like to checkinstall instead of make install so that I can always remove the packages), I'll still have to figure that one out (I checked my old debs as I had posted them on a forum and those definitely did _not_ have these files, I am really not sure where they came from). Anyhow, thank you all very much. Misha Koshelev
