NM not working?

I installed NM in my Ubuntu (Dapper), and use netatalk so my Linux drive
shows up on my Macintosh (PPC 6500). Even though the connection is working
over my network, the menubar icon shows No Network Connection when I pass
the mouse over it.
Is there something more than installing NM that I have to do?

ps...at first I'd thought of including a screenshot, but then didn't know
if this list
excludes or delets attachments. Not that it's necessary for describing the
problem, but I thought I'd ask.
